A Visit to the Sun Tunnels
On Wednesday, June 21, 2006, a group of friends again motored to Wendover, Nevada, where we met and traveled north for approximately 1 hour to observe the Summer Solstice. Last year, there were no more than about 30-40 people there. This year, I counted close to 100 who drove the long, dusty miles to witness the phenomena. The Sun Tunnels are strategically placed so that on the longest day of the year, the sun sets to the west in perfect union with the long, concrete tunnels. An eclectic group of people had gathered together to watch the phenomena, each there for their own purpose or reason. We brought food, lawnchairs, and each other. Other groups camped out. Kites were flying, frisbees thrown, a few dogs meandered about. But ultimately, all were there to enjoy the sunset. Lee, a member of our group, gave a short, meaningful presentation and suggested that for our "soltice ritual", we bury whatever has been bugging us, and learn to forgive and forget. Wise words to all. It was a great time to enjoy each other's company and reflect on our love of each other and friendships.
